I know this is from a while a go but I thought I'd add to this for others that stumble across it.

The 4-Pin S-Video cable only carries an S-Video/SVHS signal where as the 7-Pin also carries a composite signal. For those TV's that don't support S-Video the picture will show up as black and white. The picture delivered by a composite signal is poor, S-Video is not much better. You made the right choice by going with the VGA cable, the only one better would be a HDMI cable though they're not always possible.

I have seen VGA cables with built in audio connectors which seem a good idea for this situation: http://www.kenable.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=246_247&products_id=1978
